1965 Ford Mustang Shelby G.T. 350
The Ford Mustang is a legendary car, but add Shelby to the description and you're talking the best of the best. These high performance variants of the Mustang were produced from 1965 to 1970, first by Shelby and then by Ford. The 1965 Shelby GT350 had a 306-horsepower V8 Engine and was available in just one color scheme that helped make it instantly recognizable.
Carroll Shelby was an interesting man, he suffered from a leaky heart valve problem throughout his life. He started out as dump truck driver, than worked briefly as an oil-well roughneck from 1948-49, than a chicken farmer who went bankrupt, but despite his setbacks he went on to become a successful race car driver and designer.
After retiring from driving in October 1959 for health reasons, Shelby opened a high-performance driving school and the Shelby-American performance equipment and customization company in the Los Angeles area. Shelby became interested in designing a car using the AC Ace chassis, after working with Ford who agreed to provide him the chassis on credit the AC Cobra was born.
After his success with the Cobra, Shelby became heavily involved with Ford's GT40 Sports Prototype racing program which was a huge success.
Shelby's early racing successes led to a joint effort of Ford and Shelby-American to produce the Mustang-based Shelby GT350, starting in 1965, then the Shelby GT500, starting in 1967. Shelby produced those cars through 1968, then subsequent cars with the Shelby GT brand were produced in-house by Ford.
